What is clinical Pilates?
And why am I offering movement and massage sessions?
Clinical Pilates is an approach to Pilates that is adapted to clinical practice, focusing on individualised exercises to enhance movement patterns, and support the improvement of specific conditions such as back pain, Scoliosis, or injury rehab, rather than a general fitness routine.
Where as a traditional Pilates session tends to follow a set sequence of exercises, clinical Pilates includes a detailed assessment, personalised plan, therapist guidance and a collaborative approach to care.
So how does this fit in to a massage therapy session?
It is within an RMT’s scope of practice to provide therapeutic exercise. As dictated by the CCHPBC (our governing body) “Massage Therapy services: includes but is not limited to assessment, patient education, manual therapy techniques including manipulation, mobilisation and other manual methods, and non-manual therapy services when done as an adjunct to care.
Non-manual therapy services: includes but is not limited to providing one-on-one therapeutic exercise instruction.”
Movement and Massage sessions start with tailored therapeutic exercise to work on improving aches and pains, injuries or general discomforts, and is followed up with hands on treatment that can include assisted stretching, Swedish Massage or more targeted trigger point release. And because this is within the RMT’s scope of practice, it is still billable to insurance.
Benefits of Movement and Massage Sessions can include:
Exercise without flaring up injuries
Improved body awareness and control
Strengthen pelvic floor and core muscles
Injury rehabilitation
Better posture and core control
Improved athletic and sports performance
